As Anglo- irish gentlefolk, George Carr Shaw and his wife belonged to a small and exclusive social group, and genteel snobbery shaped much of their outlook. The Shaw household was an unusual one to grow up in, perhaps why one of their children, George Bernard Shaw , turned out to be a literary genius.
