Theobald Wolfe Tone (1763-1798) was born in Dublin, trained as a barrister, and was a founder member of teh Society of united Irishmen in 1791- to break the connection with England and 'unite Catholic protestant and Dissenter' He was captured after the failed 1798 rebellion, and died after suicide in prison. He is regarded as the founder of Irish Republican thought.
Henry Boylan's biography of Wolfe Tone was first published in 1981. He regarded Tone as naive. "He thought it would be possible to unite Catholic, Protestant and Dissenter under the common name of Irishman. He didn't realise the deep-rooted antagonism of the Protestants and Dissenters to being allied to the rest of Ireland."
