Edward Gibbon's huge history of the Roman and Byzantine Empires - The Decline and Fall, was originally published as a multi volume edition from 1776 to 1788.
Rather than concentrating solely on the fall of Rome (and the Western Roman Empire, personified by the sack of Rome in 412, and the final emperor in 476, and takes the story up to the fall of Constantinople in 1453, and the final collapse of the eastern Byzantine Empire, and the interaction of the empire and its successor states within the broad sweep of European history. He then looked forward to the role of the Renaissance in the eventual rise of 'Western' culture.
Obviously, this is a large work, so the volumes are heavy AS A COMBINED LOT. The slipcase of Volume 3 shows bumping and small split to upper edge. Each volume is in it's own plain slipcase
Internally, Solid in red cloth, there is some fade to the cloth covers, and fade to the spines, internally unmarked. Titles and volume number in gilt to spine. Each chronological volume has corresponding maps to endpages.

Volume 1 has a small area of paper loss ( thumb sized) from the blank front endpage. White age spotting to the edges of some of the bindings externally ( but minor in nature) . Volume IV is marginally lighter in colour than the matching volumes.
